Where does FIPEM come from?<\/h4>\n
The festival is an initiative driven by civil society organizations and the Consejo Cultura del Movimiento, and it is linked to the Coyoac\u00e1n International Book Fair (FILCO). It began, precisely, as a book fair, but we built it into something broader: a space where writers, scientists, philosophers, artists, journalists, and editors can discuss their role in culture and in shaping new role models for younger generations.<\/p>\n
This first FIPEM has been made possible thanks to the support of several organizations and foundations that believed in the project from the start: Fundaci\u00f3n Intercultural Libertad Creativa y Objetiva (FILCO A.C.), Fundaci\u00f3n Elena Poniatowska Amor, Asociaci\u00f3n Sophia, Fundaci\u00f3n Rigoberta Mench\u00fa, and the Consejo Cultura del Movimiento, made up of 75 creators, academics, and public figures.<\/p>\n
Taking on the direction of this first edition has been a great responsibility and, above all, an opportunity: to help the work and ideas of so many women reach more people, and to give girls and young people who attend the festival real role models with a name and a face.<\/p>\n
Five days, 50+ activities<\/h4>\n
The program includes conferences, book presentations, panel discussions, and performances, with the Julieta Fierro forum as the hub for most of the academic and cultural activities. The entire program is free and designed for audiences of all ages: every morning there will be more than 40 workshops on screen printing, engraving, embroidery, jewelry-making, bookbinding, and art from recycled materials, along with stargazing experiences.<\/p>\n
Among the guests joining us are Elena Poniatowska, Rigoberta Mench\u00fa, Margo Glantz, Coral Bracho, Dahlia de la Cerda, \u00c1ngeles Gonz\u00e1lez Gamio, photographer Paulina Lavista, and astronomer Luz Calder\u00f3n, among many other voices from different generations and disciplines.<\/p>\n
The program also includes the opening of the exhibition “Miradas de mujer en la fotograf\u00eda” (“Women’s Perspectives in Photography”), where four photographers from different generations, including Paulina Lavista, share their view of society and everyday life through their lens.<\/p>\n
The Tlalpan esplanade will also host a publishers’ fair with around 90 national and international imprints, along with bookstores specializing in rare and collectible books.<\/p>\n
A truly international outlook<\/h4>\n
FIPEM carries “international” in its name \u2014 and in practice, too: many of the publishing imprints joining our fair have an international presence and catalog. Adding to that global outlook are guests coming from outside Mexico: American speaker Ramani Durvasula and Spanish writers Ana Garriga and Carmen Urbita. We’re also grateful for the cooperation of Fundaci\u00f3n Rigoberta Mench\u00fa, whose support has been essential in giving this first FIPEM a reach that goes beyond borders.<\/p>\n
A festival for everyone<\/h4>\n
While FIPEM puts women and their contributions at the center of the conversation, I want to underscore that it’s a gathering open to everyone. The goal isn’t just to recognize what women have already built, but to open new conversations about the place they occupy \u2014 and will occupy \u2014 in culture, science, and thought, while also engaging young people in a dialogue about gender equality.<\/p>\n
I’m deeply grateful for the support of the Tlalpan borough government in making this project possible, and for the enthusiasm of so many colleagues and collaborators who helped make it real.<\/p>\n
See you August 12\u201316 in Tlalpan. This is only the beginning of a torch I hope will be passed on, edition after edition, from generation to generation.<\/p>\n
