Mexican Skull Exhibition. Perla Arroyo Symbol of Life.

The Mexican Skull exhibition will take place soon. Symbol of Life of Perla Arroyo in the Jesús Reyes Heroles House of Culture, Francisco Sosa 202, Santa Catarina, Coyoacán.

We are waiting for you.

Perla Arroyo is a visual artist who has focused her attention on pre-Hispanic representations, particularly those of its symbol par excellence, the skull. For the ancient Mexicans, the world, life and the idea we have of both manifests dually: feminine-masculine, life-death, sacred-profane.

These hallmarks of our culture can be seen in the Mexican Skull series, made up of six sculptures of notable beauty, cast in bronze, dedicated to honoring symbols, characters and deities that synthesize the best of our history:

  • Tehuana
  • Xoloitzcuintle
  • Coatlicue
  • Coyolxauhqui
  • Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz
  • Diego y Frida

The Mexican Skull exhibition. Symbol of Life will open on October 16 at 7 p.m. and will remain open to the public until November 10 of this year. These are authentic jewels that serve as portraits of icons of pre-Hispanic, viceregal and contemporary Mexico. Arroyo has dedicated years of research to the creation of these works, rediscovering key aspects, some unexpected and others unknown, of figures committed to our cultural history, granting them artistic vitality and critical relevance.

Additionally, for the enjoyment of attendees, and convinced that healthy recreation is not at odds with the pleasure of learning about our history and traditions, activities will take place that will complement the experience of the visit. In a very relevant way they stand out:

The presentation of the book Mexican Skull. Symbol of Life, on October 24 in the Morelos room of the Jesús Reyes Heroles House of Culture; and
The practical workshop aimed at artists, students, and the public of all ages, where the craft of sculpture will be explored and the creative processes that allowed Perla Arroyo to create the collection will be shown.

The skull has been a recurring symbol in the history of humanity, reflecting concern about the transcendence and immanence of death. In Mexico, this archetype has achieved the status of a national symbol, especially during the Day of the Dead festivities. In Arroyo’s work this vision goes beyond the superficial vision of the Anglo-Saxon holiday.

Perla Arroyo, born in Mexico City, daughter of an architect and descendant of a family of cabinetmakers, so from a very young age a deep passion for art and design was awakened in her. She has a degree in Design from the School of Design of the Institute of Fine Arts and has a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from the San Carlos Academy of UNAM. In addition, he studied Hispanic Language and Literature, knowledge that has influenced the tone and depth of his artistic work. Currently, she is a Cultural Advisor at the Mayor’s Office of Coyoacán, in addition to being a teacher, researcher and cultural entrepreneur. His work is characterized by a fine sensitivity towards Mexican culture and its symbols, seeking to link the past with the present, exploring universal themes through an aesthetic with deep roots in the traditions of our country, in its diversity and plurality.

Exhibition at Casa Marie José and Octavio Paz

In this emblematic venue, the work of Mexican Arroyo Calavera is exhibited in an atmosphere of poetry and art.

Among the reading of poetry about death written by Mexican poets, we will be able to appreciate the exquisitely crafted work in the hands of the artist.

In Mexico, death and the skull as its representation have a multiple meaning that is culturally enriched thanks to diversity and the passage of time.

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, within the framework of the Day of the Dead festivities, the plastic artist Perla Arroyo – accompanied by the reading of poetry around death, with verses by Nezahualcóyotl, Octavio Paz, Xavier Villaurrutia and Aurora Reyes, among others, will demonstrate this syncretism through the sculpture exhibition “Mexican Skull. Symbol of life.”

We took on the task of making this video as a record of the event to be able to share the cultural experience with the entire public.
